Audrey Hepburn and Grace Kelly

with 10 comments

Audrey Hepburn and Grace Kelly backstage at the 28th Annual Academy Awards on March 21, 1956. Neither Grace Kelly nor Audrey Hepburn were nominees at the event in RKO Pantages Theatre. Grace Kelly presented Best Actor Oscar to Ernest Borgnine for Marty, and Audrey Hepburn presented the Best Picture to the same film. That year, Anna Magnani won the best actress award for The Rose Tattoo, and Jo Van Fleet won the award for best supporting actress for East of Eden.

Grace Kelly had won the best actress Oscar the previous year for her role in The Country Girl, and the year before that Audrey Hepburn had won the Oscar for best actress in Roman Holiday (1954). Although you can feel the tension in the above photograph by Allan Grant, two leading ladies got along perfectly in real life. In a month’s time, Kelly will marry Monaco’s Prince Rainier and become Princess Grace.

Allan Grant (1919-2008) was a Life magazine photographer–the last photographer to photographer Marilyn Monroe before she died on August 5, 1962, and the first to photograph Marina Oswald after the assassination of John F. Kennedy in 1963.

  1. I love Audrey Hepburn and each of her films. They are classic and still hold up well.

  4. Grace Kelly has to be the only woman in the world who could stand next to Audrey, and make Audrey look gawky by comparison! Audrey is gorgeous, of course, and rightly famous for her elegance, but Grace’s composure was otherworldly.

    • you’ve got that totally backward… nothing at all was otherwordly about Grace, she was 100% All-American and worldly, exactly what Hollywood loves, whereas Audrey was famous for her ethereal appearance, voice, aura, stance, etc. But I was still very pleasantly surprised to see both together. I would have loved to see Aud and Vivien Leigh, Yvonne DeCarlo, Judy Garland, or maybe Lauren Bacall together.

  6. Grace Kelly was an Oscar – winning actress, and e real-life Princess. She’s the epytome of beauty and grace like her very name.
Audrey Hepburn is beautiful too, but Grace kelly is by far superior than Audrey. Grace was the Royal Swan, always impeccable, stylish, and and with a very virginal face.
Absolutely Stunning and enchanting, just like her sensual and beautiful voice.
I think Grace kelly is really the most ethereal creature ever! She was perfect in every way, this due to a huge charisma and to a great personality.
Grace Kelly and Audrey Hepburn are my favourite celebrities, but Grace kelly’s features are much more perfect than Audrey’s.
Grace Kelly the Greatest Icon style!

    • You guys are being so rude. Stop comparing the two and having a little discussion about who is more beautiful. That’s what’s so great about these pictures, they were both stunning, and the epitome of class and elegance. Stop making a competition out of everything and enjoy the photograph. Jeez….
