March Madness for Iconic Photos

with 15 comments

Last year during the height of March Madness in the United States, I had an idea to do a “March Madness” for Iconic Photos — to settle once and for all what are the most iconic, the most famous and the most memorable photos to the general public.

The Original Magnum Photographers: Who Will Emerge As The Victor?

But there was a problem — March Madness is usually between some sixty-odd American football basketball teams. But there are many more iconic photos. The most I can do is probably 128 photos (considering amount of time I have, and blog space).

So this post is to gauge audience enthusiasm. I don’t want to start this and realize halfway through that only five people are voting for photos. I want this to be (if not a representative or scientific sample) at least an entertaining experience and a forum for lively debate.

So the format: 128 photos, 4 groups: 1st group is photos of political or global significance. 2nd group is photos with artistic merit. (I know both are subjective terms). 3rd group is photos with greatest number of hits/comments on this blog.

And this is where you come in, dear reader: 4th group is for audience picks. you can suggest photos in comments down below. If your suggestion is not in 96 photos (from 1st, 2nd and 3rd groups), it will be chosen as one of the final 32 photos.

If all this seem very complicated, apologies. Please bear with me. I hope all this become funner as we move along.

As always, suggestion box for both rules and photo nominees is also open at my email or my twitter.

  4. A little help here on your English Accent here to sound a little more American. March Madness is the Basketball Tournament. It used to be 32 teams (And I would start out with that, 64 is a lot of photos and a lot of voing, but hey you have over a 100 years of pictures.) Now the Tournament is really 66 teams, 65 picks, and two games of 4 teams that determine the last two slots.

And I think if you look at things you will find a large amount of sporting photos that could make up a category. Muhammad Ali may have a few, Boxing, with the Beatles, in Court. There is a classic Horse Race Photo Finish with two horses step & step in stride that hangs in our local restaurant that is pretty cool. Hundreds of others.

Also, one of my Favorites is all the Physicist early in the 1920′s at a conference. Einstien, Bohr, etc that is pretty amazing when you think about their accomplishments.

I’m looking forward to this and hope we get the good discssion and photos.

    Thanks.

  6. I’ll vote! Tomatonation.com regularly does tournament voting on various topics (i.e. http://tomatonation.com/tag/the-nc-double-shot/ ) so you could check there for a voting and bracket system that seems to be hammered out.

  7. I’m in, too. Thanks for the invitation!

Yousef Karsh’s photo of Winston Churchill has always been one of my favourites. I’ve linked back to you because you gave a great description:

  10. I’ll vote :)

Does Group 1 include war photography? Otherwise I’d like to nominate this one in Group 4:
    http://iconicphotos.wordpress.com/2011/08/16/bangladesh-rashid-talukdar/
It is definitely one of the most memorable pictures I’ve seen, and it has inspired me a lot (I’m a horror writer).
I’d always like to nominate this one (http://www.photographersdirect.com/buyers/stockphoto.asp?imageid=716910) even though it’s not nearly as “iconic” as many of the pictures on your blog. I think it says a lot about one of the person responsible for forming the 20th century :)
