9/11 – Thomas Hoepker

I have written about this photo a couple of times before. But to continue my yearlong devotion to contact sheets, here is the assemblage of frames Thomas Hoepker submitted to Magnum. On 9/11, Hoepker crossed from Manhattan into Queens and then Brooklyn to get closer to the scene. In Williamsburg, he captured the above pastoral scene, but decided to hold back the photo for five years feeling that it was “ambiguous and confusing.”

Considering the towers were in Manhattan, perhaps you mean that he travelled to Queens then Brooklyn to get a wider shot of the scene, not closer to the scene. God bless everyone that was affected that day. 11 anniversaries now, and it never gets easier.

I’m also interested in seeing individual frames in details.

I was uptown. Everyone on the street was walking up and down as if nothing was happening, save for myself and one other person staring down the avenue at the billowing smoke. It was very strange.
